Newborn Photographer in Saanich

Newborn sessions that celebrate the whole family, from big brothers and sisters to grandparents and the family dog.

in-home newborn photo session, Newborn in Saanich

When a new baby arrives, it isn’t only parents whose world changes. Big siblings become big siblings. Grandparents meet a new grandchild. Even the family dog has to figure out what that little bundle is. Those first weeks are full of firsts for everyone.

I’m Alyssa, a lifestyle newborn photographer from North Saanich, and I’m a mom of three. Some of my favourite newborn photos aren’t of the baby alone at all. They’re of a toddler peeking into the bassinet, or a grandmother holding a new grandchild for the first time.

This page is for Saanich families who want their newborn session to tell that bigger story.

Including siblings without the stress

Toddlers and preschoolers have short attention spans, especially when there’s a new baby taking up everyone’s attention. So I plan sibling photos early in the session, while they’re fresh, and keep them quick and playful.

Rather than asking a two year old to hold still, I’ll give them a job: give baby a gentle kiss, count their toes, whisper a secret in their ear. Those small moments say far more than a posed portrait. Once the siblings are done, they’re free to play while we take our time with baby and with you.

Having older kids at home is one more reason an in-home session works so well. Everyone is in familiar surroundings, toys are close at hand and nobody has to be strapped into a car seat. For practical tips, see my post on preparing for an in-home newborn session.

  • Sibling photos come first, while energy is high
  • Give big brothers and sisters a gentle job
  • Have a snack and a favourite toy ready
  • Pets are welcome at home, too

Grandparents and a gentle outing in Saanich

Grandparents are always welcome. Packages include immediate family, and extra people like grandparents are a small per-person add-on. Just let me know who will be joining so I can plan the flow.

If you’d like a few photos outdoors, Saanich has a couple of easy, peaceful options. Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary has a stroller-accessible loop around the lake and a level floating boardwalk through the wetland, which is lovely for a slow walk with the pram and a grandparent on your arm. The sanctuary recommends its low-slope path over the upslope section on the south side. Keep in mind that dogs, other than service dogs, are not permitted there.

At Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park, Beaver Beach at the south end of Beaver Lake has accessible parking, paved paths, accessible washrooms and a picnic area. A blanket on the grass near the water makes a calm, simple setting for a new family. Check the current rules for the park before you go, as some apply seasonally.

Outdoor newborn time stays short and cosy, with plenty of layers. We’ll do the bulk of the session at home and add a fresh-air stop only if it feels right for you.

Alyssa Orrego Photography gave me way more than I hoped for!! With incredible light and photos, to the patient, gentle, peaceful way she worked with my grandson, I was wowed start to finish.

Questions families ask

When is the best time for newborn photos?

Between 5 and 10 days old is ideal, while babies are sleepy and easy to settle, and sessions can be done up to about 3 weeks. Book during pregnancy and we’ll set the date once baby arrives.

What if my toddler has a meltdown?

It happens, and it’s completely fine. We’ll take a break, offer a snack and try again later, or capture the cuddle that follows. Real life makes the best photos.

Can our dog be in the newborn photos?

Yes, pets are family. At home, your dog can settle nearby, and we’ll add them to a few family photos once everyone is calm. A helper to hold the leash or offer treats makes it easier.

Do you travel to all parts of Saanich?

Yes. Travel fees may apply only for locations more than 25 km from North Saanich. My Saanich photographer page has more about working in the area.

What will we receive?

A private online gallery of edited images, black and white versions, and full-resolution digitals with printing rights. Learn more on my newborn photography page or compare packages on my investment page.
