Photographer in Sidney, BC

Seaside and in-home family, maternity and newborn photos, just down the road from my home base.

family photo session outdoors on Vancouver Island, Sidney

Sidney is right next door to my home base in North Saanich, so it is one of the easiest places for us to meet. If you are looking for a photographer in Sidney, BC who keeps things calm and focuses on real connection, I would love to hear about your family.

I photograph families, maternity, newborns and couples here, either outdoors by the water or in the comfort of your own home. I guide you the whole way, with gentle prompts and little games, so you never have to wonder where to stand or what to do with your hands.

Sidney is well inside my 25 km travel area, so travel fees are not something you need to think about here. We can put all of our planning energy into outfits, timing and the spot that suits your family best.

Spots I love suggesting in Sidney

Sidney packs a lot of variety into a small, walkable town. In one session we can move from open sea views to quiet, shaded trees without spending half the hour in the car.

The waterfront is busiest on warm summer afternoons, so I usually suggest the last hour or two before sunset, or a weekday evening. Always check the current park rules before you go, and I will help you plan around community events.

  • Sidney Waterfront Walkway: about 2.5 km along the Salish Sea, with views of the Gulf Islands and, on a clear day, Mount Baker. The path is smooth and well kept, which is great for strollers and grandparents. A couple of access points have stairs, so I will point you to a step-free entrance.
  • Beacon Park: at the foot of Beacon Avenue, with open green space, a band shell and the walkway running along the shore. Sailboats and water make a bright, simple backdrop.
  • Glass Beach: a small beach park on Beacon Avenue West, between Beacon Park and the Bevan Fishing Pier, with garden planters, public art, benches and a set of stairs down to the beach.
  • Tulista Park: a waterfront park on Fifth Street with lawns, garden displays, a playground and accessible washrooms. Handy when little ones need a play break halfway through.
  • Reay Creek Park: a wooded park off Frost Avenue where pathways follow a creek under the forest canopy. A soft, green change from the seaside for maternity or newborn photos.

Seaside sessions for every stage

For family sessions, the walkway gives kids room to run, skip rocks in their imagination and hold hands with Mom and Dad while I capture the in-between moments. Immediate family is included, and grandparents or cousins can join for a small per-person add-on.

For maternity photos, a flowing dress against the blue of the Salish Sea is hard to beat. Sessions are about an hour, I have a few outfits in my client closet if you need one, and I can refer you for hair and makeup.

For newborn photos, I usually suggest staying home. The best window is when baby is 5 to 10 days old, and up to about three weeks still works well. An in-home session means no packing the car, and you can feed and settle baby whenever you need to.

From booking to your gallery

Once you book, I send you a prep guide, a Pinterest style board with outfit ideas and a short questionnaire so I can get to know your family. We also have a free style and location consultation to choose between the walkway, the forest or your home.

Your photos are delivered in a private online gallery, with black and white versions included. You receive full-resolution digitals with printing rights, and you can order prints, albums and canvases through me. You can see the packages on my investment page.

Alyssa had such an amazing way of helping us feel relaxed and have fun! I’m so happy with how the photos turned out and she really captured each one of my children so beautifully. I will always cherish these photos and HIGHLY recommend hiring her!

Questions families ask

Is the Sidney waterfront too busy for family photos?

It can be lively on summer afternoons, but people spread out along the walkway. An evening session or a weekday usually feels much quieter, and I work around passers-by so they do not end up in your photos.

Can we do our Sidney session at home instead?

Yes. I offer in-home sessions for families and newborns, and they work well on rainy days too. Your home becomes part of the story.

Where should we park for the waterfront?

It depends on which part of the walkway we use. I will send you a meeting point with your session details, and I suggest checking current parking signs when you arrive.

How far ahead should I book?

I have limited availability, especially for evening sessions in summer, so reaching out early is a good idea. For newborns, contact me during pregnancy so we can pencil in a window around your due date.

Is Sidney a good choice in winter?

Yes. Low winter sun along the water can be lovely, and if the weather turns, we simply move your session indoors. Shorter days mean afternoon start times.
