Photo Sessions in Victoria, BC: Where and When
Seaside paths, oak meadows, harbour lights and heritage streets, and how to pick the right one for your session.

Victoria packs a lot of variety into a small city: seaside paths, old oak meadows, a busy harbour and colourful heritage streets. If you are searching for photoshoot locations in Victoria, BC, here are the spots I love suggesting in the city itself, and when each one looks its best.
I photograph families, maternity, newborns and couples. A toddler who needs room to run and a couple hoping for city lights at dusk will not want the same place, which is exactly what our free style and location consultation is for.
I am based in North Saanich, so some Victoria locations may be farther than my 25 km travel area. A travel fee may apply, so ask me and I will confirm it before you book. My service areas page shows where else I work.

City of Victoria spots I love suggesting
Each of these is in the City of Victoria, and several sit close together along the southern shore, so one session can include two different looks.
- Beacon Hill Park: about 75 hectares (200 acres) at the edge of downtown, with flower beds, ponds, protected Garry oak areas and a view across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains. Parts of the park are sensitive ecosystems, so we stay on the paths.
- Dallas Road waterfront: a dedicated path runs about 4 km along the shore from Holland Point Park east past Clover Point. Ocean and big sky make a simple, airy backdrop for families and couples.
- Ogden Point breakwater: a 762 metre granite breakwater in James Bay, completed in 1917, with a flat walkway out over the water and ships coming into the harbour. A favourite for couples. With little ones, we keep well back from the edges.
- The Inner Harbour: the Parliament Buildings, the Empress hotel and the Lower Causeway sit together around the water, with float planes and boats coming and going. The Parliament Buildings are outlined in lights every evening.
- Government House gardens: 14.6 hectares on Rockland Avenue, with a Victorian rose garden, rhododendrons, a duck pond and a large Garry oak ecosystem. The grounds are free and open every day of the year. Formal ceremonies are not permitted, and I check current guidelines before planning a session.
- Fernwood: a character neighbourhood with many homes dating from the 1890s onward and a car-free plaza at Fernwood Square. Painted houses give a relaxed, everyday feel if you prefer city charm over open nature.
Light, seasons and crowds in the city
Most of the waterfront spots look south across the strait, so on clear evenings the light comes in low and warm from the side. For families, I usually suggest the last hour or two before sunset. If midday is all that works, the trees at Beacon Hill Park and Government House give softer shade.
Spring is lovely here, when the gardens and Garry oak meadows start to bloom. Summer brings the most visitors, especially around the Inner Harbour in July and August, so evenings and weekdays feel calmer. Fall adds warm colour in the parks, and winter suits crisp seaside photos or a cosy session at home.
I always watch the wind along Dallas Road and Ogden Point, since both are open to the water, and I keep a sheltered back-up spot in mind. Rules for events and photography can change, so we will check the current rules before you go.
Matching a Victoria location to your session
For family sessions with young children, Beacon Hill Park is hard to beat, with grass, shade and room to wander. Immediate family is included, and grandparents or cousins are a small per-person add-on.
For maternity photos, I love the rose garden at Government House or the sea and mountains along Dallas Road. Sessions are about an hour, and my client closet has a few outfits if you would like one.
For couples and engagement sessions, the Inner Harbour at dusk and the Ogden Point breakwater mix city and sea. For newborns, I usually suggest staying home, ideally when baby is 5 to 10 days old. More ideas are on my photo locations page.
Questions families ask
Which Victoria location is easiest with a stroller or grandparents?
Beacon Hill Park has footpaths, washrooms and plenty of open grass, and the Ogden Point walkway is flat. I will suggest a meeting point with a short walk.
Do we need a permit for photos in Beacon Hill Park?
The City of Victoria has its own event and filming permit pages, and rules can change. I check the current rules before every session and will let you know if anything is needed.
What happens if it is windy on the waterfront?
We can move inland to Beacon Hill Park or the Government House gardens, where the trees offer more shelter. I also keep the breeze in mind when we plan hair and outfits.
Can we have city lights in our photos?
Yes. The Parliament Buildings are lit every evening, and the Inner Harbour is lovely for couples just after sunset. I plan the timing so we use the last daylight first, then the lights.
Is there a travel fee for Victoria sessions?
A travel fee may apply for locations farther than 25 km from North Saanich, and some Victoria spots may be past that. Ask me through my contact page and I will confirm before you book.
