Wedding Photographer in Sidney, BC

Natural, connection-focused wedding photos, with Sidney’s waterfront as your backdrop.

wedding photography, Weddings in Sidney

Sidney by the Sea is made for wedding portraits. In a few short blocks you have seaside gardens, a pier stretching out over the water, public art and wide views across to the Gulf Islands. Wherever your ceremony and celebration take place, the waterfront is right there for those quiet moments as a newly married couple.

I’m Alyssa, a photographer based in North Saanich, minutes from downtown Sidney. I’m all about love and connection, so my wedding photos focus on the way you look at each other, the hand squeezes and the happy tears, rather than stiff, posed lineups.

You can read more about my approach on my wedding photography page. Here, I want to share how I’d plan the portrait part of a Sidney wedding.

A waterfront portrait walk in Sidney

One of my favourite ways to photograph couples in Sidney is a simple, unhurried walk. We start at one end of the waterfront and wander, stopping wherever the light and the moment feel right. You get time alone together on a busy day, and I get to photograph the real, relaxed you.

Beacon Park, at the foot of Beacon Avenue, has open green space, public art, a band shell and walkways along the water. It’s a natural starting point if your guests are gathering downtown.

Just along from it, Glass Beach sits between Beacon Park and the Bevan Fishing Pier, with garden displays, benches and a staircase down to the beach. The steps and gardens make lovely layered frames, and a few photos down by the water feel wonderfully calm.

Then there’s the pier itself, reached through Eastview Park. Walking out over the water together, with nothing but sea and sky around you, gives some of the most romantic, uncluttered portraits in town. The Waterfront Walkway ties all of this together over about 2.5 km, with sculptures and benches along the way.

  • Beacon Park: green space, public art and waterfront paths
  • Glass Beach: gardens, a staircase and a quiet beach
  • Eastview Park and the Bevan Fishing Pier: open sea and sky
  • The Waterfront Walkway connecting them all

Planning tips for a Sidney wedding

Sidney’s waterfront is public and well loved, so expect walkers, cyclists and families, especially on summer weekends. I work around them easily, but an earlier or later portrait time usually feels more private. Evening light along the water is soft and flattering.

If you’re hoping to hold your ceremony itself in a public park, check with the Town of Sidney about what’s needed before you set your heart on it. For a ceremony at the venue you’ve chosen, I’m happy to fit your portrait walk into the day wherever it works best, whether that’s before the ceremony, between ceremony and dinner, or at sunset.

Bring a wrap or jacket for the breeze off the water, and shoes you can walk in between spots. Once we’ve booked, I’ll ask about your vision, your families and the moments that matter most so nothing important is missed.

Family photos matter too. I’ll help you put together a short list of the groupings you want, like grandparents, siblings and the whole extended family, so we can move through them quickly and get everyone back to celebrating.

I highly recommend Alyssa Orrego for all photography needs! She has done both my personal family photos and action photos for business marketing. She is extremely professional and the results speak for themselves. She delivers excellent photos!

Questions families ask

Do you photograph small weddings in Sidney?

Yes, and I love them. Small weddings and elopements leave lots of time for relaxed, connected portraits. See my elopement and small wedding page.

Should we do engagement photos first?

I’d recommend it. An engagement session helps you get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. Learn more on my couples and engagement page.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

West Coast weather keeps us flexible. A clear umbrella, a sheltered spot under trees or a doorway, and soft overcast light can create beautiful, cosy portraits. We’ll talk through a backup plan well before the day.

Can we order a wedding album?

Yes. I offer prints, albums and canvases, and my top two packages include a custom designed luxury album.

Do you charge travel for Sidney weddings?

No, Sidney is within 25 km of my North Saanich home base. You’ll find my other Sidney sessions on my Sidney photographer page.
