Wedding Photographer in North Saanich

Quiet, nature-filled wedding photos in the place I call home.

elopement photography, Weddings in North Saanich

North Saanich is a peaceful corner of the Island. Rural roads, forested hills and shoreline on both sides of the Peninsula give it a calm, unhurried feel, which is exactly what many couples want on their wedding day.

I’m Alyssa, and I live here. I photograph weddings with the same heart I bring to every session: real emotion, close connection and as little stiffness as possible. I’d much rather capture the two of you laughing at a private joke than lined up and staring at the lens.

North Saanich especially suits small weddings, elopements and couples who want time in nature during their day. My wedding photography page has the overview, and my elopement photography page covers smaller celebrations.

Planning your portraits around the light

In North Saanich, the light changes the whole feel of a place. Here’s how I think about it by time of day.

Midday to afternoon is perfect for forest portraits. When the sun is high, it filters through the tall trees in soft beams, and the shade keeps everyone comfortable.

The hour or two before sunset is when open, west-facing places glow. The Saanich Inlet side of the Peninsula catches that evening light beautifully, and it’s my favourite time for portraits of the two of you alone.

During the darker months, the sun sets early, so we’ll plan the day backwards from sunset to make the most of the light you have.

North Saanich spots I love suggesting for wedding portraits

Patricia Bay Park, at the south end of Scoter Trail, looks straight west over Patricia Bay and Saanich Inlet. It has paved accessible paths, a grassy slope down to a gentle beach and open views toward the sunset. It’s an easy spot for older family members to join, too.

Horth Hill Regional Park is my pick for couples who love the forest. The trails wind through the trees before the Summit Trail opens to views of the Peninsula, the Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands. It’s rated moderate, so wear sensible shoes for the walk and bring your dress shoes in a bag. The CRD lists the park’s hours as sunrise to sunset, so for sunset portraits we’d plan to be back down in time. Here’s my guide to Horth Hill.

ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱/John Dean Provincial Park, which straddles North and Central Saanich around Mount Newton, has old-growth Douglas-fir and western red cedar, some around 70 metres tall, with lookouts toward Saanich Inlet. Its main entrance is closed to vehicles from November to March, so it’s best for spring and summer weddings. Tall, ancient trees make a wedding feel like a fairy tale.

If you’re thinking of a ceremony in a park, check with the park operator about permits and current rules before you set your plans.

  • Patricia Bay Park: west-facing sunsets and easy paths
  • Horth Hill: forest trails and a hilltop view
  • John Dean Park: towering old-growth forest, spring and summer

Your venue, your way

Many North Saanich couples hold their ceremony at a venue they’ve chosen or on private family land, then slip away for portraits. I’m happy to work with whatever setup you have. Once we book, we’ll map out your day together, including family groupings, travel time between spots and quiet moments for just the two of you.

I highly recommend Alyssa Orrego for all photography needs! She has done both my personal family photos and action photos for business marketing. She is extremely professional and the results speak for themselves. She delivers excellent photos!
