A good headshot does a lot of quiet work. It sits on your website, your LinkedIn profile and your business cards, and it’s often the first thing a new client sees. It should look professional, but more importantly, it should look like you on a good day.

I’m Alyssa, a photographer based in North Saanich, just minutes from downtown Sidney. Most of my work is with families and couples, where my whole focus is helping people relax. That same approach makes a big difference with headshots. You’ll never need to worry about what to do with your hands or where to look. I’ll guide you through it.

You can read about my general approach on my professional headshots page. This page covers what a headshot session looks like here in Sidney.

Choosing a Sidney backdrop that fits your work

The setting behind you tells people something about your business. A financial advisor and a yoga instructor probably want different feels. Sidney offers a few distinct options within a short walk or drive of each other.

Downtown along Beacon Avenue gives an urban, approachable look. Shopfronts and the life of the street blur softly behind you and say that you’re part of the community. It suits realtors, shop owners, consultants and anyone with a local, people-first business.

The Waterfront Walkway, which meets Beacon Avenue and runs about 2.5 km along the shore, gives you open sea and sky. A soft blue background feels calm and fresh, and it’s a natural fit for wellness practitioners, coaches and anyone whose brand leans relaxed.

For something greener, the KELSET (Reay Creek) trail runs through a forested area beside the creek. The canopy gives soft, even shade that’s flattering for faces, and a blurred green background works well for counsellors, nature-based businesses and creatives.

  • Beacon Avenue: urban and community-minded
  • Waterfront Walkway: open, calm and coastal
  • KELSET (Reay Creek): soft forest shade
  • Your own office or studio: real and recognisable

Getting ready for your headshot

Wear what you’d wear to meet an important client, then make it one step simpler. Solid colours that suit your skin tone photograph well. Avoid large logos, busy patterns and anything that needs constant adjusting. Bring a second top or jacket if you’d like options.

Timing helps too. Soft, indirect light is the most flattering for headshots, so I usually suggest the gentler hours of the morning or later afternoon, or a bright overcast day, which acts like a giant softbox. If you’re booking at your workplace, a quieter time of day means fewer interruptions and a more relaxed you.

We’ll talk about how and where you’ll use the photos before the session, so I can capture a mix of framings, like close crops for profile pictures and wider shots with room for text on a website. Every image I deliver is individually retouched with true skin tones, so you’ll still look like yourself.

If you need more than a headshot, such as photos of you working, your products or your space, a longer branding session might suit you better. Have a look at my business portfolio for examples of that kind of work.

I highly recommend Alyssa Orrego for all photography needs! She has done both my personal family photos and action photos for business marketing. She is extremely professional and the results speak for themselves. She delivers excellent photos!
