Family Photographer in Oak Bay

Sandy beaches, Garry oak meadows and rocky shoreline, each at its best in a different season.

seasonal family photo session, Family in Oak Bay

Oak Bay has some of the most beloved shoreline in Greater Victoria. Families come for sandy Willows Beach, the wild Garry oak meadows of Uplands Park and the rocks at Cattle Point, where you can look out over Haro Strait toward Mount Baker.

I’m Alyssa, a family photographer based on the Saanich Peninsula. I love photographing families who want something more than a row of smiles: real hugs, real laughter and the quiet looks that say so much.

Because Oak Bay’s highlights change so much through the year, I like to plan sessions here by season. Here’s how I think about it.

Oak Bay through the seasons

Spring is meadow season. Uplands Park covers more than 30 hectares and is home to rare Garry oak meadows and woodlands, with one of the highest concentrations of endangered plant species in Canada. The Town of Oak Bay says the meadows are especially striking in spring. The Central Meadow is closed to foot traffic from November to mid-April to protect it, so we’d stay on open trails and treat the wildflowers gently.

Summer belongs to Willows Beach. It’s a sandy beach with a large lawn, benches and an oceanside walkway that links to Cattle Point. The beach is busy on warm days, so an early evening start often works best for a family session. A Mobi-Mat is installed at the Bowker Avenue entrance in summer, which helps family members with limited mobility reach the sand.

Willows has deep roots, too. The area was once the site of Sitchanalth, a Coast Salish seaport, and later the Willows Fairground, which gave the beach its name. I love sessions that feel connected to a place like that. A walk along the sand, a picnic blanket on the lawn and a treat from the seasonal tea room afterwards make a sweet family evening, with photos as a bonus.

Fall and winter are perfect for the rocky shore at Cattle Point, where we can walk along the rocks with the sea and islands behind us, wrapped up in cosy knits. On wet or chilly days, an in-home session is a lovely alternative. Your home in Oak Bay is full of the details that tell your family’s story.

  • Spring: Garry oak meadows at Uplands Park (stay on open trails)
  • Summer: Willows Beach, ideally in the early evening
  • Fall and winter: Cattle Point rocks, or a cosy session at home

A few Oak Bay planning notes

Oak Bay’s waterfront is part of the oldest Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Canada’s Pacific coast, established in 1923, and the beaches have seasonal dog rules. If your pup is coming, check the current rules for your chosen spot before you go.

Oak Bay is a bit farther from my North Saanich home than the Peninsula towns. Travel fees may apply for locations more than 25 km away, so let me know your spot and I’ll give you the details up front. No surprises.

After booking, you’ll get my prep guide, a Pinterest style board and a short questionnaire. Against Oak Bay’s blue water and golden grasses, soft blues, creams and warm neutrals tend to look beautiful.

Alyssa had such an amazing way of helping us feel relaxed and have fun! I’m so happy with how the photos turned out and she really captured each one of my children so beautifully. I will always cherish these photos and HIGHLY recommend hiring her!

Questions families ask

Can our extended family join an Oak Bay session?

Of course. Packages include immediate family, and grandparents, aunts or cousins are a small per-person add-on. A beach session is a lovely way to get everyone together.

How do I keep kids happy on a busy beach?

Give them something to do, like collecting shells or chasing waves, and let me work around them. Arriving at a quieter time helps too.

Do you only photograph families in Oak Bay?

No, I also photograph maternity, newborn, couples and more. See my Oak Bay photographer page for the full picture.

Where can I learn more about your family sessions?

My family photography page explains my approach, and my investment page lists every package.

Will Mom actually be in the photos?

Yes, always. I wrote about why it matters so much in my post on moms in family photos.
