Proposal Photographer in Victoria, BC
You plan the question. I’ll quietly capture the moment, the reaction and the happy minutes that follow.

A proposal is over in seconds, and most of the time nobody has a camera ready. Afterward, the person who said yes often wishes they could see their own face in that moment. That’s where I come in.
I’m Alyssa, a lifestyle photographer based in North Saanich. I love photographing love, connection and real emotion, and there are few moments more emotional than a proposal. My job is to stay out of sight, capture the question and the reaction, and then help you celebrate with a few relaxed photos of the two of you.
If you’re nervous about planning it, that’s completely normal. We’ll work through the details together so all you have to focus on is the words.

How a Proposal Session Works
Every proposal is different, but most follow a simple shape. We plan quietly ahead of time, I arrive early and blend in, and you bring your partner to the spot without giving anything away.
- We talk first. You’ll tell me about your partner, your plan and the place you have in mind.
- We choose the exact spot. I’ll suggest where to stand so the light is on their face and the background is clean.
- We agree on a signal. A simple cue lets me know you’re about to begin.
- I stay discreet. I’ll be close enough to capture the moment, but far enough that it still feels private.
- We celebrate. Once the surprise is over, I’ll come out and we’ll take relaxed couple photos while you’re both still glowing.
Choosing the Right Place
The best proposal locations have a little meaning, a little privacy and good light. A spot from your first date, a trail you walk together or a quiet stretch of shoreline can all work wonderfully. A busy viewpoint on a sunny weekend can be harder, because it’s tough to stay hidden and to get a clear view.
Think about timing too. Softer light in the hours before sunset is flattering for faces and makes the whole moment glow. If you’d like ideas, my photo location guides cover beaches, forests and viewpoints around Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula. Parks have their own rules, so check the current rules before you go.
After the Yes
Those first few minutes after a proposal are full of happy tears, laughter and phone calls you’ll want to make right away. Once you’re ready, we’ll take some unhurried photos of the two of you, so you have more than just the moment itself. You’ll also have a set of images to share when you tell your families.
Many couples go on to book a full engagement session later, especially for save-the-dates. If that’s on your list, my tips on how to prepare for an engagement session will help. And if you’d like to stay close to my home base, see engagement photos on the Saanich Peninsula.
Questions families ask
How will my partner not notice you?
I’ll arrive early and stay at a distance, looking like anyone else enjoying the view. We’ll agree on where I’ll be ahead of time, so you know exactly where to stand.
What if my partner suspects something?
It happens, and it’s okay. Their reaction is still real, and the joy afterward is what matters. We can plan a simple cover story, like a walk before dinner, to keep things relaxed.
What should I tell my partner to wear?
Try to nudge them toward something they feel good in without giving away the surprise, like suggesting you’re going somewhere a little special. Sturdy shoes help if we’re on a trail or beach.
Can family or friends be there for the proposal?
Yes. Some people like to have family waiting nearby to celebrate right after. Let me know who’s coming, and I’ll make sure to photograph those first hugs too.
How do I book a proposal session?
Send me a message with your rough date, the location you have in mind and a little about your plan. I’ll be discreet, so let me know the best way to reach you.
